Not having spoken to a French person for a long time I'd forgotten about this little cultural mismatch. But apparently the French will typically give you a long and detailed answer to what we wishy-washy Anglo types assume is a rhetorical question. We think they're long-winded and rude and they think we're insincere. Lingua Franca on Radio National had a nice little segment on just this a few weeks back.
